Letter From Head

“Faced with the second year of pandemic challenges, we continued to invest in our teachers and our programs. As the year came to an end, our collective foot was on the gas pedal as we accelerated out of the COVID twists and turns.”

Dear MTS Community,

A former Mount Tamalpais School Board member and ongoing mentor of mine told me that the best organizations make investments during periods of challenge and accelerate out of a downturn. We, the MTS community, have done just that. Faced with the second year of pandemic challenges, we continued to invest in our teachers and our program. And, as the year came to an end, our collective foot was on the gas pedal as we accelerated out of the COVID twists and turns.

Once again, this year’s Annual Report leads with a list of all of our professional community members, our teachers and staff. They were the fuel behind that acceleration. They centered learning and joy amidst another year of pandemic distraction. Because of our professional community, Willy Wonka went on stage in front of a live audience, families were welcomed to campus for celebrations of learning, and all classes were covered, even with countless other things on the to-do list. Thank you to our professional community for embodying strength in the face of adversity.

Our parent, grandparent, Board, and alumni communities were also critical to our success. You not only trusted us with your children, but you set philanthropic records. For the first time in the school’s history, the Annual Fund surpassed $1,000,000. These dollars, critical to deliver our robust school program, were also a much-appreciated endorsement of our collective hard work to educate children during the pandemic. Thank you!

In-person community building returned to full strength in the Spring of 2022. Thank you to our Big Night Out chairs and volunteers for bringing us together to celebrate in person and raise $269,500 to support our Professional Community. From cocktails and conversation to late-night silent disco dancing, Big Night Out exceeded its goal of being a festive community event. That strong spirit of volunteerism continued at our first all-school graduation in three years. We set up chairs and tables together, served food together, and celebrated both the Class of 2022 and the return of the MTS experience that we all had been missing. Thank you to everyone who made those events so special.

Finally, with the foot on the gas pedal, we are speeding into a future guided by our MTS Into Action strategic plan. Into Action, unveiled to the school community in May, is the product of eleven months of work by our whole community, guided by a diverse Steering Committee, and approved by the Board of Trustees. The four Habits of Excellence will direct our work for the next five years. I look forward to creating the full-speed future of MTS with you all as we focus on: committed exploration, critical reasoning, conscientious citizenship, and collective wellness and belonging.

Thank you for the 2021-2022 school year. I look forward to many more miles of the MTS road ahead!
